Phil X & The Drills
2003. Having been a hired gun/sideman/unseen studio guitar slinger for several artists (from Alice Cooper to Kelly Clarkson) for many years, Phil X felt the need to explore an artistic canvas where his style of music composition and poetic lyric writing could be showcased. Adding long time friends, Daniel Spree on bass and Jeremy Spencer (Five Finger Death Punch) on drums and The Drills was born.
In the beginning, it was just "The Drills" but after the debut independent EP release, Kick Your Ass in 17 minutes, Phil's online presence on YouTube started to take off. Within one year, his Fretted American vintage guitar demo videos had millions of collective views so deciding to rename the band Phil X & The Drills seemed the obvious choice from a marketing standpoint.
The band started drawing audiences wanting to see the "guy in the videos" and Dustin Jack, the video director, started using Drills music as opening and ending credit music in production prompting the question "what band is that?" to become very common in the video comments.
In 2011 and then again in 2013 until present day, Phil X & The Drills audience grew quite immensely when Phil was brought into the Bon Jovi camp to at first fill in for Richie Sambora and then later replace him as the lead guitar player in the band. Many Bon Jovi fans simply became Phil X & The Drills fans out of love for the new energy he brought to the stage.
To support the release of 'Stupid Good Lookings Vol 1 (2019), the band played a handful of shows in southern California. In 2020, they played 8 at-capacity shows in the UK. 8 shows in Europe were booked to follow but the Covid "shut down" regulations made it mandatory that the band fly home to the US instead of Amsterdam to continue.
In October of 2024, Phil X & The Drills signed with Frontiers Label Group and after releasing singles 'Don't Wake Up Dead feat. Ray Luzier, 'Moving To California' feat. Jeremy Spencer & Fake The Day Away feat. Tommy Lee, the first full length album with the label, 'POW! Right In The Kisser' was released on March 28, 2025. 'Fake The Day Away' made the top 20 on the Classic Rock charts with steady rotation on 68 radio stations.
Along with the drummers mentioned on the singles, each song on 'POW! Right in the Kisser' has a different drummer boasting 11 in total. From iconic legends like Tico Torres & Liberty Devitto to new wonder kid, Tosh Peterson (Machine Gun Kelly, Lady Gaga), songs were written specifically for each drummer's "vibe". Kenny Aronoff, Gary Novak, Brent Fitz, Brian Tichy & Ryan Macmillan all deliver powerful performances full of each individual's style and personality.
Live, Phil X & The Drills are a ball of fire exploding on every stage with power, hooky songs & blow away guitar pyro. The vocals & harmonies are strong & a throwback to raw 70s ROCK is evident. From headlining clubs & small theaters to opening for Mötley Crüe at the 2024 Illinois State Fair, Phil X & The Drills have left audiences wanting more & buzzing from their visceral spirit of
